Full-fledged thalassemia centre opens at BSMMU

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU)has launched a full-fledged Thalassemia centre at the outdoor of the university with a coordinated treatment facilities for the thalassemia patients of the country, said a university release yesterday, reports BSS. To mark the World Thalassemia Day, BSMMU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Quamrul Hasan Khan inaugurated the full-fledged Thalassemia centre at 403 and 404 no room of the outdoor at around 9.15am yesterday. The thalassemia patient will get coordinated treatment facilities including blood test and blood transfusion from this centre. Earlier, BSMMU brought out a rally on the occasion of the World Thalassemia Day under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor of the University and the rally paraded different parts of the BSMMU campus. Meanwhile, the expert physicians of the Hematology Department of the BSMMU provided day-long free medical treatment to the thalassemia patients to mark the World Thalassemia Day.
With the supervision of BSMMUs Hematology Department Chairman Professor Dr Masuda Begum, the day-long free medical campaign was participated by teachers, physicians, nurses, thalassemia patients and their relatives. BSMMUs Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M Sharfuddin Ahmed, Pro-VC Professor Dr ASM Zakaria Shawpan, Treasurer Professor Dr Asgar Morol, Director (hospital )Brigadier General (retd)M Abdul Mazid Bhuiyan and additional registrar Professor Dr M Asadul Islam were present.
Thalassemia is a inherited blood disorders that affect the bodys ability to produce hemoglobin and red blood cells - patients have a lower-than-normal number of red blood cells in their bodies and too little hemoglobin.
More than one crore people in Bangladesh are the active carriers of the disease -where ever year around 7500 newborns are taking birth with the thalassemia disease.
