The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is going to change its present recruitment and promotion procedures which would enable a sepoy of the paramilitary force to become additional director, equivalent to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. “According to the draft ‘Recruitment Rules for the Rank of Junior Officer and Sepoy of BGB’, if a sepoy have graduation he would have the opportunity to be promoted to the post of additional director after gradually qualifying through the ranks of deputy director (DD), assistant director (AD), Subedar Major, Habildar and Lance Nayik”, said BGB director general Maj. Gen. Aziz Ahmed. Talking to The Independent he also mentioned that the entire training method of the force would be modernised so that the paramilitary force, as a second line of defence, can be prepared for times of need.
“No one can be promoted to the post of junior commissioned officer (JCO) if he or she does not have a minimum qualification of graduation,” he said, adding, “And that is why we have advised our forces’ personnel to complete their graduation studies to prepare themselves to be better officers of a modern border force.” “In this connection, we have made arrangements with the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) to enable them to complete the graduation courses for the BGB members,” the DG of BGB said.
The BGB chief also disclosed that the force has started recruiting its jawans with a qualification of Higher Secondary Education (HSC) pass instead of the existing Secondary School Certificate (SSC) pass, which will enable them to qualify for the post of Class I officer of the paramilitary force.
“To recruit jawans with a qualification of HSC pass, we took permission from the home ministry. The ministry is currently preparing the ‘Recruitment Rules for the Rank of Junior Officer and Sepoy of BGB’ towards this end,” Maj. Gen. Aziz Ahmed said.
According to the new plan, some 16 posts (5 per cent) out of a total of 311 posts of additional director, equivalent to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, would be promoted from the lower post of DD, equivalent to the rank of Major, and 42 posts (25 per cent) of a total of 168 posts of DD would be promoted from the posts of AD, equivalent to the rank of Captain, while 101 posts of AD would be promoted from the posts of Subedar Major, as per the new rules.
At present, the force is effectively discharging the tasks and duties assigned to it through its 12 sectors, 47 battalions and numerous border outposts. As a paramilitary force, the BGB is entrusted with the responsibility of defending the 4,427-km-long border of the country. At present, over 50,000 members of the BGB are working in the border force. The BGB personnel have already started professional training courses like operations, intelligence and border management at various levels recently under the force’s “We have introduced a number of professional subjects, to be included in the training course recently, to prepare an efficient force,” he said. The BGB’s DG also said they have raised the educational standards to build a core of quality officers for the paramilitary force.
