The growing cottage industry has been creating jobs for rural poor alleviating their poverty through increasing production of quality handicraft products enhancing rural economy, speakers said here on Thursday, reports BSS. They also put emphasis on providing more assistance to rural poor, including distressed and unemployed women, both from the public and private sectors for flourishing brighter prospects of cottage industries to improve their livelihoods and life standard. They were addressing inaugural ceremony of the 10 day-long ‘Clothes and Handicrafts Fair- 2016’ being organised by Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) at Public Library ground in the city.
Director (Marketing & Design) of BSCIC and Joint Secretary of the government Mostafa Kamal attended the launching ceremony and formally inaugurated the fair by cutting ribbon as the chief guest. With Deputy General Manager of BSCIC for Rangpur Khairul Alam Almazee in the chair, Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar, Rajshahi Regional Director of BSCIC Altaf Hossain and Office Secretary of district Awami League Tauhidur Rahman Tutul were present as special guests. Private sector owners, entrepreneurs and organisations have set up 36 stalls displaying readymade garments and other clothes, handicraft and handloom products produced in the local cottage industries and small-scale enterprises in the fair. Tens of hundreds of people including officials, teachers, students, young generations, housewives, men, women, adolescents, professionals, civil society members and commoners thronged the fair on the inaugural day. Talking to BSS last night, organisers of the fair said huge sale of the locally produced handicrafts, handloom garments, boutiques, household and other goods was noticed in the fair on the inaugural day creating enthusiasm among local entrepreneurs.
