Less rainfall affects cultivation of crops

Drought like situation is prevailing in Jhenidah as there has been no significant rainfall in the current season.
The fruit growers are the worst sufferers as the tender sprouts of fruits like  lichi, jackfruits and other seasonal fruits are dropping everyday. Further, water from the tube wells in some areas cannot be lifted as was the under ground water level has fallen sharply.
Mantu Seikh and Nazmul Mandal of Gobindapur village in Shailkupa upazila in Jhenidah said, they have been spending huge money for irrigation water as there is very little water from rainfall in the current season, said farmers.
They said, Usually rains starts between late February and early March every year, but this season it was least causing the vegetable plots have dried faster which could not be controlled with the limited water from the under ground irrigation pumps.
A mango orchard owner of Baluhar village of Kotchandpur Mahmud Hossain said, most of the tender sprouts of mango and lichi from his trees were dropped as he could not provide adequate irrigation water this season. It is really tough for any farmer to provide huge irrigation water to every orchard plants in the season, he said.
Sources in the Agriculture Extension Department (AED) office said the farmers of six upazilas brought a total of 8,340 hectares of land under vegetable farming in the current season.
The sources said, they have recorded a total of 109 mm rainfall since January this year. 1,211 mm rainfall was recorded in 2011, 916 in 2012, 983 in 2013, 905 in 2014, 1,299.2 mm in 2015 and 109 mm till April 18.
Deputy Director of AED in Jhenidah Shah Mohammad Akramul Haque said usually rainfall occurs between the months of June and September every year.
