Abahani Limited formally announced Tamim Iqbal as their captain for the 2015-16 season of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPL) yesterday. The DPL will kick-off tomorrow at three different venues in the capital and adjoining areas.
Jalal Younus, vice-chairman of Abahani Cricket Committee, declared Tamim’s name before the media at new captain announcement at the jersey handover ceremony on the Club’s premises in the capital.
Thereafter, Younus handed over team’s jersey to Tamim Iqbal at the programme, where Abahani’s vice chairmen Kazi Anam Ahmed, Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, Sheikh Bashir Al Mamun, KM Alamgir Hossain along with cricket secretary Abdul Awal Bhulu, member (former national captain) Akram Khan and team manager Mamun Hossain were also present.
Jalal Younus in his reaction said, “The team has been better. We’ve been suffering title drought since the last four seasons. But we could have formed a good team this time. It became a balanced team, where there are experienced, junior and promising players. If they could perform in the field then we could hope a good result in the league.”
After the end of the programme, Abahani’s new captain said that everything is possible if they can execute their plan in tandem in the field.
“The way the team management formed the team that was very excellent. But we’ve to perform in the ground though we have formed a strong team on paper. If we could execute our plan altogether well in the ground than other teams then everything is possible,” said Tamim Iqbal.
“I’m still learning as a captain. We’ve got Sujon (Khaled Mahmud) bhai, who is experienced and captained Bangladesh team. We want to go ahead with combined planning,” Tamim told reporters.
The opener said that they will try to provide their hundred percent efforts for the team and help it to be successful in the game.
“Pressure is always in cricket. And there will have big pressure if the game is for Abahani like big team. We all know whenever Abahani forms a team they form it to be champions,” the left-handed batsman said.
“As a player, our responsibility is to give our hundred percent for the team. I’m sure if we could give hundred percent, then we’ll get better result. After giving our hundred percent if we lose a match there will then be no complaint from team management. But our main motive is to give our hundred percent for the team’s success,” he added.
On the other hand, head coach Khaled Mahmud Sujon said he is hopeful about the team to be champions.
“Every year is challenging. Coaching means challenge. While I work for a big team I took challenge with me. To work for a big team, there is both challenge and motivation. I believe if we could execute our plan properly then we will do good result as the team has ability to be champions,” said Khaled Mahmud, who coached Abahani while the team became champions for the last time in 2010-11.
“I’ve a nice memory with Abahani as player and coach. I know the pulse of the team. I believe I gradually go forward to the goal. We’ve some players who have capability to win the match single-handedly. At the end of the day, we could tell you that we’ve formed a team for championship. We’ve championed,” Sujon also said.
The coach said that they are seeking a quality foreign batsman to fill the dearth of the middle-order.
“It’d be better if we could manage to bring a middle-order foreign batsman. But none can get quality player as all the players are in busy now. IPL alongside other domestic cricket tournaments across the world are going on,” he said, adding “Thereafter, we’ll seek a middle-order batsman. But if we get a top-order batsman then it will be helpful for us. All have to play for the team. Position sometimes becomes important for some players but we will do what is better for the team.”
