A four-day exhibition, titled ‘Wings of Hope’ featuring artworks by 36 Rana Plaza survivors and 8 artists of SHaKo-Women Artist Association of Bangladesh, will begin on April 21 at the Bengal Art Lounge in the city’s Gulshan area. Bengal Art Lounge and the Embassies of the Nordic countries-- Denmark, Norway and Sweden -- in partnership with SHaKo, Meena e. V, Dhamrai Metal Craft and Fashion Revolution Bangladesh have arranged the exhibition to celebrate the empowerment of women and in solidarity with Rana Plaza survivors. Brac founder and chairperson Sir Fazle Hasan Abed will inaugurate the exhibition on April 21, while Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) chairperson Sultana Kamal will be present as special guest.
The exhibition ‘Wings of Hope’ complements the International Women’s Day celebration by the Nordic embassies in Bangladesh. The embassies in partnership with Meena e.V, a Bangladeshi NGO working with Rana Plaza survivors, had conducted an art workshop for the survivors. At the workshop, the women created wax sculptures representing their aspirations and desires in life with thoughtful guidance from Kirsten Fugl, an art educator from Denmark, and artists from SHaKo. The final versions of the wax sculptures were then cast in metal by Dhamrai Metal Crafts. The proceedings from the exhibition will help the Rana Plaza survivors to start their own sewing workshop enabling them to generate their own income and gain economic independence.
The exhibition will remain open to all every day from 12pm to 8pm, until April 24.
