MoU inked with India to establish LPG plant

Staff Reporter

Bangladesh yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India for establishing a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plant in Chittagong as a joint venture. The MoU was signed between Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for setting up the country's largest ever LPG plant in Chittagong. BPC chairman Mahmood Reza Khan and IOCL chairman B Ashok were the two signatories. The LPG plant will meet the growing energy demand and ensure energy security in Bangladesh. It will also supply LPG to the seven north-eastern Indian states, known as seven sisters. Besides signing the MoU, Bangladesh and India have reached mutual understanding on several issues in the field of energy cooperation between the two nations. These include Bangladesh's import of re-gasified LNG from India, cooperation with each other in offshore survey in the maritime area and Bangladesh's import of liquid petroleum from India through a pipeline.
The understanding was reached during a meeting between the visiting Indian State Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan, and the Bangladesh State Minister for Power and Energy, Nasrul Hamid, in Dhaka yesterday.
Dhaka formally proposed to India that it would like to import 70 million cubic feet (mmcfd) of natural gas from Tripura per day to meet the country’s growing energy demand. "We've requested India to consider whether they could connect their gas field in Tripura with our network and we sought 70 mmcfd gas to meet our demand in Chittagong. The Indian state minister has assured us that he would get back after discussing the matter with his government," Nasrul Hamid told reporters while briefing them on the proceedings of the bilateral meeting. Dharmendra Pradhan said his country's commitment to collaborate with Bangladesh in achieving the goal of "power for all" by 2021, as outlined in the joint statement "Notun projonmo-Nayi disha" agreed upon during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh in June 2015.
