After announcing the National Film Award this year, the allegation of plagiarism in its making has been raised against the government-funded film ‘Brihonnola’. Directed by Murad Parvez, the film had won the National Film Award in three categories--best film, best story and best dialogue for the year 2014. Finally, the government has cancelled all three awards of ‘Brihonnola’ as the allegation of plagiarism has been found true. A source in the Information Ministry confirmed DhakaLive on Saturday that the awards for the film have been cancelled according to the recommendations made by the committee that investigated the allegation.
This time around, the government has found the allegation that the seed of ‘Brihonnola’ was taken from Syed Mustafa Siraj’s short story titled ‘Gachhta Bolechhilo’ is true.
In this connection, West Bengal-based noted authors Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay and Debesh Roy had written to Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu requesting the government to pay Rs 150,000 to the familAy of Siraj as royalty for the story.
Earlier Murad Parvez said to an online newspaper about the allegation, “Actually I feel embarrassed to speak over the issue. Even after this, I say that a story may have characteristic similarities with another.”
“But the story of my film does not match the short story in any way. They are totally different in philosophy and concept,” he said.
“Some mischievous people are trying to embarrass me,” he added.
On the other hand, Parvez had earlier credited Siraj and officially took rights of a story from Siraj for his film ‘Chandragrahon’.
‘Brihonnola’ depicts the story of Hindu-Muslim conflicts set in a small village called Mohanpur. The film stars Sohana Saba, Ferdous Ahmed, Azad Abul Kalam, Jhuna Choudhury and Intekhab Dinar, among others, in lead roles.
