Iffat Ara, Mafizur Rahman perform at Praner Khela

Prominent singers Iffat Ara Dewan and Mafizur Rahman performed at  a musical programme titled ‘Praner Khela’, organised by Bengal Foundation, at Bengal Shilpalaya in the city’s Dhanmondi area on Thursday. Born in June 12, 1951 in Mymensingh, Iffat Ara received her early training in music through a five-year music course at Chhayanaut in Dhaka under noted Tagore exponents Waheedul Haque and Sanjida Khatun. Subsequently, she specialised in Rabindra Sangeet and classic bangla songs of the 1920s, such as songs of Angurbala, Indubala, Nidhu Babu etc, songs of 1940s such as those of Santosh Sengupta, Saila Devi, Kanan Devi, Dilip Kumar Roy etc, songs of 1950-60s . She is presently a Member of the Executive Committee of Chhayanaut.
Dewan has performed extensively both in Bangladesh and abroad. She has performed in Kolkata, Shantiniketan, Delhi, Mumbai in India, and also in the USA, UK, France, Switzerland, Canada and Belgium. She has been a regular performer for Bangladesh TV and Radio since 1968. She was conferred the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award in 2007. She has also released several popular music albums over the last decades that have mesmerised the music connoisseurs worldwide. Iffat Ara Dewan is also a trained painter, having attended the Byam Shaw School of Art, London, in 1992. She has organised several solo art exhibitions. On the other hand, Mofizur Rahman took his early training from Sangeet Guru Abu Bakkar Siddique. He took lesson on Nazrul Sangeet from Nilufar Yasmin and Khalid Hossain, and on Classical music from Shamima Parveen. He received gold medal at National level on Nazrul Sangeet in 1997 and 1998.  At present, he is a part-time faculty at the Department Music in Dhaka University.
