For singer Kanak Chapa, it seems that destiny had major plans in store for her ever since she was a child. Her father Azizul Haq Murshed was a direct student of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin. He tried to pass on his skills to his daughter and she did pick up that fascination for art. Ever since she was in school, she used to draw flowers and animals in her school copies and it became so regular that soon the teachers would be able to identify those copies as those of Kanak Chapa’s. However, later on she focused her attention towards music. Her father is no more and it seems that he would have been immensely proud to see his daughter take up art.
Today marks a momentous occasion for Kanak Chapa, as for the first time, she will have a solo art exhibition titled ‘Didhar Dolachol’. The exhibition will take place at Gallery 4 at the National Art Plaza of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA).
DhakaLive has news that Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed will be present as chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the exhibition, while Abdus Shakoor Shah, poet-lyricist Rafiquzzaman and national and international award winning artist Kanak Chanpa Chakma will be present as special guests. The exhibition has been dedicated to the late eminent artist and director Khalid Mahmud Mithu, who passed away recently in a tragic accident.
Among others, Kanak Chapa’s husband and children will also be present at the exhibition.
‘Didhar Dolachol’ will feature more than 100 of Kanak Chapa’s artworks, going as far back as those from her schooldays. Regarding her first solo art exhibition, she said, “My father experienced me being a singer but could not live long enough to see me as an artist. After he died, my mother passed on his colour box to me and encouraged me to pursue art. From there I got inspiration to draw some pictures as a tribute to my father, to honour his memory. Now at this point in my life, I feel like just as I my art was expressed through my music, now my music is being expressed as art. There will come a time when I am no longer here, but my work will remain true and eternal, that this world will experience and enjoy. I ask for everyone’s well wishes and prayers.”
‘Didhar Dolachol’ will continue until
April 4. l
