3-day Mime Festival begins at TSC today

Aiming to take the mime art to an international level and to convey a message of building a better society, for the first time, Dhaka University Mime Action (DUMA) has organised a three-day National Mime Festival at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University. The festival will start today with the slogan Na Bola Kotha Gulo Na Bolei Hok Bola. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon will inaugurate the festival today as chief guest, while Dhaka University professor Dr. Shahid Akhtar Hossain (Pro Vice Chancellor- Administration), professor Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Business Studies, Professor Dr Asim Sarkar, provost of Jagannath Hall, Father Tapan DRozario, chairman of the Department of World Religions, and Bangladesh Mime Federation president Zahid Ripon will be present, among others. After the opening ceremony, DUMAs much-anticipated Mime-drama Light Versus Darkness will be staged at 6:30pm.
The festival will feature the performances by 15 pantomime troupes including Dhaka-based Swapnadal, Mime Art, Bengal Theatre, Gentleman Pantomime, Paribartan Mime Academy, Bangladesh Hudamime Club, Chittagong-based Pantomime Movement, Anadikapla, Muktamancha Nirbak Dal from Gazipur, Rangan Mime Academy of Jahangirnagar University, Narayanganj-based troupe Shruti Cultural Centre and Bangladesh Mime Theatre.
The performance of the mime troupes will be presented at the TSC auditorium, while street show will be held at the campus premises, including Curzon Hall, Shaheed Minar, Arts Faculty and Shahbag. The festival will come to an end with the award giving ceremony and mime show on March 15. DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique will attend the closing ceremony as chief guest, while Professor Mofizur Rahman, chairman of DU Mass Communication and Journalism Department, Sudeep Chakraborty, chairman, Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, among others, will also be present as special guests. l
