A section of a 30-feet wide street in Gulshan Circle-2 caved in yesterday after developing cracks a few days ago. Local residents alleged that the incident occurred due to pumping of water by a contractor of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) for development works on the lake there. The incident occured at about 3:40pm yesterday in front of House No. 29, Road No. 55 at Gulshan-2, said Gulshan police. Getting information, officials of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and RAJUK went there.
The chief engineer of the DNCC said that some eight feet of the road caved-in in the afternoon. RAJUK sources claimed the street caved in naturally. Police closed the affected road number 55 of the Gulshan Circle-2 to traffic following the incident.
Owner of a seven-storied house on the street, BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, said his building developed minor cracks when the street caved in. He, however, said the damage to his building was not serious yet. Residents in two neighbouring buildings are unable to go out and fears further collapse following the incident, he said. Dr Mosharraf, a former Dhaka University Geology teacher, blamed the contractor working on the development of the lake for the incident. He said the water was pumped out without adequate protection for the road, leaving the road vulnerable to cave in. Heavy materials were also moved in there for the lake development, he said.
