The recognition of Baul songs and Jamdani as UNESCO World Heritage was celebrated through a cultural evening on Saturday at Hotel Radisson Blue in the city. Though the declaration was made by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2013 for Jamdani saree as ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’, while the announcement on Baul songs as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity came in 2008, it was the first formal celebration of the recognition organised by Intellectual Property Association of Bangladesh (IPAB). Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu was present as chief guest at the programme, while Cultural Affairs Secretary Aktari Mamtaz, IPAB President Salahuddin Abdullah and its Director General Azizur Rahman, among others, were present. As many as 43 waivers of Jamdani and contributors to the development of this industry and Baul singers, including veteran singer Kangalini Sufia were awarded at the programme. Jamdani refers to the woven muslin customarily worn by the people of Bangladesh in many ceremonies such as weddings and traditional practices. The elaborately woven and patterned translucent cotton is held as a symbol of royalty. By history, the garment is worn by upper class members. Bangladesh holds the Jamdani sari as a symbol of self-recognition, status, identity and dignity. It also gives a feeling of cultural identity and social identification for the women of Bangladesh.
The Bauls are mystic minstrels living in rural Bangladesh and West Bengal, India. The Baul Movement, at its peak in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, has now regained popularity among the rural population of Bangladesh. Their music and way of life have influenced a large segment of Bengali culture, and particularly the compositions of Nobel Prize laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
Organisers said about the event, “With the aim of creating awareness to protect the heritage of Baul songs and Jamdani and to uphold their significance to the younger generation, we organised such an event.”
A number of prominent singers of the country performed in the programme. Besides, a dazzling fashion show of Jamdani saree was also arranged.
