The Qatar Government has agreed to recruit Bangladeshi workers for its domestic jobs with a minimum wage of QR1200 instead of the existing QR900. The decision was taken at a Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting held in Probashi Kalyan Bhaban at Eskaton in Dhaka yesterday. Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Secretary Begum Shamsun Nahar led the Bangladesh team, while the Qatari delegation was led by Qatar Passport Department Additional Director General Brigadier Mohammed Ahmed M Al Atiq Al Dossary. After the meeting, the Qatari delegation made a courtesy call on Expatriates Welfare Minister Nurul Islam BSc at his Probashi Kalyan Bhaban office. According to an official statement of the Ministry, Nurul Islam recalled his visit to Qatar and meetings with Qatar Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs Minister Issa Saad Al-Fafali Al- Nuaimi and other highly-placed officials of the country.
During the meeting, the Qatari officials assured him of recruiting large number of workers from Bangladesh. At the JWG meeting, the Qatari team expressed eagerness to recruit skilled domestic workers, both male and female, including professionals such as nurses, engineers, teachers, IT workers and salespersons from Bangladesh. The official release also stated that the Qatari delegation agreed to increase monthly salaries and other benefits for Bangladeshi workers in future. They agreed to hike it up to QR1,200 from existing QR900. During the meeting, both sides agreed to increase security and other facilities for Bangladeshi workers in Qatar and reduce their migration cost.
It has already agreed to recruit around 3 lakh Bangladeshi workers in the next two years during the Expatriate Welfare Minister’s recent visit to the country. In view of the Football World Cup of 2022 in Qatar, the country needs a huge number of foreign workers for ongoing development activities. It employed around 1.23 lakh workers from Bangladesh in 2015.
