Bright future ahead for Bangladesh cricket

Bright future ahead for Bangladesh cricket

To the great disappointment of their fans, the Bangladesh Under 19 cricket team lost their semi-final match against West Indies. The manner in which the Junior Tigers beat their opponents in all their previous matches and roared into the semi final, many thought that a win against the inexperienced West Indies was foregone conclusion. However, cricket is called the game of glorious uncertainty for a reason. And that is no one can predict the result beforehand.
Though Bangladesh lost they were by no means disgraced. As a matter of fact, never before did Bangladesh reached the last four in this particular tournament. Throughout the tournament, the team played like a well-oiled machine. Not only did they win their matches, they dominated their opponents and gave them no semblance of chance. Unfortunately the only match where they were a little below par happened to be the semi-final.
These youngsters can certainly be proud of their performance. And if their showing in this tournament is any indication, cricket in Bangladesh will be in capable hands in the near future. Skill-wise these players will only get better and, physique wise, they will get stronger. Sure there were some mistakes by the players. But that is only to be expected from cricketers who are below the age of 19. These mistakes–dropped catches in semi-final for instance– were the result of youthful exuberance and not because there was any lack of commitment.
Many are criticising the team’s skipper and the think tank for taking the decision to bat first. It is always easy to be wise after the event and hindsight is always 20/20. A lot of thought goes into the decision of whether a team will bat or bowl first. So the skipper, in consultation with the coaching staff took the best decision in his opinion. And the score was hardly a miniscule one. If the Bangladeshi fielders could hold onto their catches and fielded just a little better the score of 226 could have been defended.
Cricket is one game where Bangladesh has excelled. Even the most powerful teams do not take the Bangladesh senior squad lightly. Quite clearly the junior team is on the right track. If they are nurtured properly we hope they will become even more of a powerhouse in global cricket.
