5 of a family murdered in Narayanganj

Five members of a family, including two children, were hacked to death inside their rented flat at Baburail in Narayanganj city by unidentified assailants. Police recovered throat-slit bodies of the five victims from their flat on the ground floor of a four-storey building yesterday evening. Hajera, a relative of the victims, identified the deceased as Taslima, 35, her son Shanto, 10, daughter Sumaiya, 5, brother Morshedul and daughter-in-law Lamia, 25. While police immediately could not mention any motive behind the murders, Morsheda, mother of victim Taslima, said the murders might have taken place due to a dispute over money. Taslima’s husband Shafique, who works as a driver in Dhaka, had loaned a good deal of money on interest from some party, she said. But Shafique was unable to repay the money and due to a dispute over this matter, the family moved from Dhaka to Narayanganj last year, she said.
Talking to reporters, Morsheda said she had talked with his son Morshedul, one of the victims, over telephone last on Friday night. His mobile phone was found switched off after that, she added. Morsheda said Sharif, husband of victim Lamia, returned from Kishoreganj yesterday evening and went to that house, but nobody opened the door despite repeated knocking, and the flat was found locked from outside. “After some times, he (Sharif) along with a relative of the landlord broke the door open and found the bodies. They informed the police immediately,” Morsheda added.
A police team from the Sadar Police Station immediately reached the spot and sealed off the flat. Later, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police and RAB members also came to the spot. A CID team was also called in from Dhaka to collect evidence and investigate the murders, said police. Senior police officers also visited the spot. After examining the bodies, police suspected that they might have been killed between noon and evening.
Officer-in-charge of Narayanganj Sadar Police Station Abdul Malek said the victims were the residents of a rented house belonging to Ismail Miah at Baburail. Ismail Hossain, the owner of the house number 131/11 of Baburail 2, lives in the US, said neighbours. They also claimed that the ground-floor flat was seen locked from outside since Friday evening. The family rented the flat in November last year, they said.
Earlier, on October 5 last year, unidentified men slaughtered a former Power Development Board (PDB) Chairman Khijir Khan, 66, also a so-called pir, at his Khanka Sharif (gathering place of followers) at Gudaraghat in the city's Madhya Badda area. Hailing from Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia, Khijir Khan was also the president of Dhaka-based Kushtia Samity. Khijir served as PDB chairman from 1996 to 2001. On August 27, 2014, Channel I presenter Nurul Islam Faruqi was slaughtered in his home in the capital’s Rajarbagh area. On December 21, 2013, a self-proclaimed pir or holy man named Lutfar Rahman and five others were slaughtered at Lutfar’s residence in Gopibagh. Unknown assailants slaughtered the six, including Lutfar, 60, and his son Sarwar Islam aka Monir, on the first floor of a four-storey building at Ramkrishna Mission Road. The other victims were the house's caretaker Monjur Alam aka Monju and Faruk's followers 'Shaheen', 'Rasel', and Mojibur Rahman. Earlier, on February 11, 2012, Sagor Sarowar, news editor of Maasranga TV, and his wife Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were murdered in their apartment in the capital.
