Bangladesh Olympic team’s hopes were almost shattered to move into the semifinal of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football tournament when they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Maldives at Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital yesterday. By virtue of the win, Maldives moved into the semifinal as the first team and as Group-A champions with successive two victories when they defeated Cambodia by 3-2 in their opening match. However, Bangladesh, who needed a win to confirm the semifinal berth or at least a draw to remain in the race, conceded two goals inside 25 minutes while both goals were outcome of defense blunders. Easa Ismail opened the account for Maldives utilizing a Nashid back pass (1-0). Imaz Ahmed doubled the lead five minutes later when he did not miss to utilise a lapse committed by Bangladesh defenders (2-0).
