Kotchandpur, now a mango trading hub

Kotchandpur in Jhenidah district has become a hub of mango business attracting sellers and buyers from across the country. Faruk Hossain, a mango trader, brought 20 maunds of Amrupali mango to Kotchandpur mango market yesterday from Jibannagar of Chuadanga district hoping to do a brisk  business. Secretary of Kotchandpur Mango Businessman Samity Abdul Latif said it is one of the biggest mango markets in Khulna division. The uniqueness of the market is that the mangoes brought here are not chemically treated. Formalin and carbide free mangoes go all over the county everyday from here, he said adding: “We have a market monitoring team under the upazila administration, which works here freely,” he added. This place is preferred by both buyers and sellers, he said boasting about the existing clean business environment. He said: “Nobody has to give extra tolls to buy and sell mangoes here. A businessman can get good transport facility and can get cheap labour as well.”
He, however, said they need mango storage facilities and boarding houses for the traders coming from far-flung areas. Tofazzel Hossain, a mango trader who came from Dhaka, said it is really a big  market. He said traders are coming here from all over the country. Joynal Abedin, another buyer from Sylhet, said from here one can get langra, gopalbhog,  himshagor, bombai, amrupali, khirsha, totapori, lakshmanbhog, lotabhog and  haribhanga and other local varieties of mangoes at cheaper rate.
One can buy  mango from 7 am till night. Currently, langra is sold at Tk 800 to Tk 900 per maund, himsagor at Tk 850 to Tk 950 per maund and other quality mango at Tk 700 to Tk 750 per maund. President of Kotchandpur Mango Businessman Shamite Sanjoy Biswas told The Independent that the mango market was established beside diversion road in Kotchandpur  upazila of Jhenidah.  There are at least 70 established shops here where about 200 to 250 traders are engaged in the business. “The duration of this business is only three months now. If the government gives us storage facility, boarding houses for longer stay of traders and ensure good transportation facility, then we can do our business throughout the year.  And in the process the government might also earn some extra revenue,” he said further.
