Language movement veteran Yousuf Hassan no more

Language movement veteran Dr Syed Yusuf Hassan died of old-age complications at a hospital in the capital in the early hours of yesterday. He was 90, reports BSS. Dr Yousuf left behind wife, a son, a daughter and a host of friends, relatives and well wishers to mourn his death. He was recipient of prestigious "Bangla Academy Award" for his outstanding contribution during the language movement and he was arrested on February 21 in 1952 for his speech claiming Bangla should be made the mother tongue of Pakistan. Yousuf was close acquaintance of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He toured Peking, China in 1954 Peace Conference of the Asian and Pacific Regions with likes of Tofazzel Hossain Manik Miah, Ataur Rahman Khan, Khandakar Mohammed Illias and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was one of the founder members of NAP (Muzzafar) and was president of Aligarh University Old Boys Association in Dhaka at the time of death. He was laid to eternal rest at Mohammadpur graveyard after Zohr prayers.
