Govt team forced to delay return trip

A group of 20 scientists and engineers of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) were not allowed to fly home from the Indian city of Mumbai on Thursday due to an altercation with the staff of an airline over excess luggage. The entire team, led by BAEC Senior Scientific Officer Subhasish Sardar, arrived home on Friday after sorting out the problem regarding excess luggage, government sources told The Independent. BAEC Chairman Mohammad Monirul Islam acknowledged the development and said that he was looking into the matter.
The scientists and engineers were in Mumbai to participate in a training on second foundation course on nuclear energy in Department of Atomic Energy in Mumbai from November 16 to December 23, sources said, adding that the training was sponsored by the Indian government.
According to the sources, the scientists and engineers went to the airport to check-in with excess luggage. When they were asked to pay for the excessive weight beyond their entitled weight, they got engaged in an altercation with the staff of Jet Airways. As a result, the airline refused to fly the entire group to Dhaka.  Subsequently, they said that the Indian external affairs ministry contacted Bangladesh’s high commission Afterwards, the Bangladeshi delegation stayed in a hotel for an additional day and returned home on Friday, the sources said. The Bangladesh high commission in India has already informed the foreign ministry about the incident, they said. According to the sources, foreign ministry officials concerned appear to be disappointed over the ‘embarrassing’ development and are of the opinion that the science and technology ministry, who sanctioned the visit, should conduct an inquiry and take measures against the offenders.
