Arrest warrants issued against BNP leaders

STAFF REPORTER

A Dhaka court yesterday issued arrest warrants against 28 leaders and activists of the BNP-led 20-Party Alliance, including BNP standing committee member Rafiqul Islam Mia and joint general secretary Amanullah Aman, in two cases filed under the Special Power Act. Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah of the metropolitan sessions judge's court issued the warrants after accepting the charges levelled against 42 BNP leaders and activists in the case—as the accused failed to appear before the court—as per an earlier directive. The court directed the officer in charge of Mirpur Police Station to submit the compliance report by July 7. On April 22, Mirpur police had framed charges against 42 leaders and activists of the alliance, including Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed and Mosaddak Ali Falu, in connection with an arson case. On the same day, the court fixed June 7 as the date for framing charges against the 42 accused in connection with the cases.
The accused against whom arrest warrants have been issued are BNP standing committee member barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, joint general secretary Amanullah Aman, national executive committee member Syeda Ashia Ashrafi Papia, Khaleda Zia’s press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan Sohel, special assistant to BNP chairperson advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Jubo Dal secretary Saiful Islam Nirob, former Chhatra Dal secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku, Azizul Bari Helal, Swechchhasebak Dal central president Habibunnabi Khan Sohel, Jubo Dal Dhaka North president mamun Hasan, Swechchhasebak Dal Dhaka North convener Yasin Ali and Jamaat-e-Islami central committee leader Dr Shibli Nomani.
Of them, a total of 14 BNP men, including Rizvi Ahmed and Mosaddek Ali Falu, are now in jail, while the others, including Rafiqul Islam Miah and Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, are still at large. According to the case statement, the accused had instigated members of the BNP-led alliance to torch a bus at the capital's Mirpur-1 area on January 28 during an anti-government movement. The investigation report reveals that they had hurled bombs and brickbats at buses to kill passengers at Mirpur during the hartal called by the BNP-led alliance on January 28. On the same day, Khandaker Rajib Ahmed, the ASI of Mirpur Model Police Station, had filed a case against 10 BNP leaders, including Ruhul.
