Imagine getting enrolled at a university, all confused whether the right choice has been made in terms of choice of department. Some students do change their majors within the first year as their expectations do not meet the reality.
Imagine again: a student from business, English or engineering department who actually wants to do media studies, but cannot due to pressure from family or peers, who may be thinking more about the lucrative jobs that those majors can lead to.
That’s where a media club comes in as an extracurricular activity that promotes media-related work. With that in mind, the Media Club at the University of Liberal Arts, Bangladesh (ULAB) started its journey on February 13, 2004.
If the heart of ULAB is its Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) department, then the Media Club has a lot to live up to. As not every ULABian is from the MSJ programme, the Club provides a perfect place for them to participate in mass media activities.
Media Club members can be seen organising, acting, presenting, modelling, public speaking and even debating in programmes throughout the academic year.
ULAB hosts a ‘club day’ once a year on its main campus at Ramchandrapur. At the 2014 Club Day event, the Media Club was responsible for stage design, which it did wonderfully with much enthusiasm and dedication from its members, who worked for three days straight, while also performing in a drama.
One unique activity by the Club was its street painting on the occasion of Pohela Boishak 1421 last year. Club members, including volunteers, gathered on the stroke of midnight in front of the gate at the university’s Dhanmondi Rd 4A campus to draw ‘alpana’ from there up to Road 7A, where ULAB’s other campus is located. From midnight till 6 am, the artists worked hard and in the morning of Pohela Boishak, the road from 4A to 7A was beautifully painted with traditional designs and motifs.
The Club also holds photography and art exhibitions to promote its members’ creativity. Every semester, workshops are held in these fields. For example, popular cartoonist Ahsan Habib once did a sketching workshop for the members. Other prominent personalities from different areas have also conducted workshops for the club.
Currently, the Club has 180 members, making it one of the largest clubs of the university. Of the members, six are executive members who include a general secretary, organising secretary, finance secretary, publication secretary, vice-president and president.
“Most members of our club end up doing something in the media or other related work. Like the club’s first president, Don Sumdany, who is now quite renowned, while my predecessor Morshed Mishu now works at Unmad, and another member is currently modelling,” said Shaila Akhtar, who is the present club president.
