Bangladesh Bird Club and Bangladesh National Museum jointly organised a weeklong photography exhibition on birds, titled ‘Pakhir Desh Bangladesh’ (Bangladesh--the country of birds) at the Nalini Kanta Bhattasali Gallery of the Museum at Shahbagh.
Photographs of 102 different species of birds are displayed at the exhibition, which ends tomorrow. The beautiful pictures were taken by 46 photographers of the Bird Club. The exhibition was curated by Enam Ul Haque, founder of the Club.
“This is our second photography exhibition and it includes photographs of 102 species of birds. Last year, we showcased 48 species. So, in total, we have showcased 150 species of birds in two years. Our target is to showcase all species of birds in Bangladesh through this kind of photography shows within 10 years,” said Enam Ul Haque.
One of the photographers, Faridi Numan, said: “Even though I am not a professional, I do wildlife photography as my hobby. And I love birds. So, whenever I get the chance, I take their pictures. This kind of exhibition is commendable. It will help increase the love of birds among general people. Also, the related authorities will be encouraged to be more careful about preserving birds.”
Artist Hashem Khan and singer Rezwana Choudhury Bannya inaugurated the exhibition on December 4 at the Museum’s Kabi Sufia Kamal Auditorium. Bird Club president Dr Niaz Abdur Rahman also spoke at the inaugural ceremony, while the director general of National Museum, Faizul Latif Chowdhury, presided.
“We see so many birds in nature which has different of shades, variation and beauty. Artists describe them in an artistic way and most people just love birds of nature. Through this exhibition, I believe more people will be interested to know about different species of birds,” said Dr Rahman.
Bangladesh Bird Club has been working with birds for around 20 years. The club is involved in the observation and census of different local and foreign species. It also gives scholarships to students who study and do research on birds.
“Birds and they sky are few of the remarkable elements of nature that give us sheer pleasure. We see so many existences of birds in the works of Rabindranath Tagore. He depicted birds as a symbol of freedom. I wish birds will be protected properly and freedom should not be hampered,” said Bannya, a Rabindra Sangeet exponent.
After our independence, hunting birds was prohibited by law, but we still see them being killed across the country, said Hashem Khan.
“We should stop that at any cost. Bangladesh Bird Club has taken a good step. They are working hard, we should appreciate them. The government and other related authorities should take steps to save our birds. And also, we should appreciate the photographers who have taken these pictures, because capturing birds on camera is so hard _ it’s a high level of art as well,” Khan added.
“We see the presence of birds in many works of our poets, especially in the poems of Jibanananda Das. We should love birds and be serious about protecting them,” remarked Latif Chowdhury.
