On December 8 in 1971, Chandpur district (then sub–division) was freed from the clutches of the Pakistani occupation forces as the freedom fighters captured Chandpur town without firing a shot. Sensing a defeat the Pakisrtani soldiers fled the area at dead of night.
Pak Army’s chief commander in Chandpur area, Colonel Shutti along with his associates flew by helicopters towards Burma. Others retreated to Dhaka by gunboats the following morning. Bu they came under attacks from freedom fighters at a place near Mohonpur in Matlab, said elderly freedom fighters in Chandpur.
Early in the morning, freedom fighters Hanif Patwary, Mohiuddin Patwary, Syed Abed Mansur, Jahurul Islam Pathan, Shah Md Atiqullah Bachchu, Nurul Amin Khasru and others along with Indian forces entered the town like to a rousing welcome by locals. Bangladesh flag were hoisted at police stations and government establishment in Chandpur. Indian tanks also entered the town with freedom fighters after freeing Hajiganj and Shahrasti areas.
In the meantime, all the Rajakers of Chandpur managed to flee. Some were caught by the freedom-loving people. They were Latif Khandaker, Abbassi, Ayatullah and others. Many other Rajakers – Shamsu Mukter, Salam Mukter( (Advocate), Hafej Sarder and some others in Hajiganj managed to flee by boats under cover of darkness.
Our Narail correspondent reports: Lohagara upazila was freed from the clutches of Pakistani invaders and their collaborators on December 8, 1971.
Lohagara Upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad Lohagara upazila unit, different socio-cultural organisations and pro-liberation political parties have taken up different programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner.
The programme of the day includes hoisting of national flag, colourful rally, discussion meeting and doa mahfil.
On this day in 1971, during the liberation war valiant freedom fighters of Lohagara, led by commander Sharif Khashruzzaman, encircled Lohagara police station, the temporary camp of the Pakistani forces, and launched a guerilla attack.
A fierce fight took place between Pak Army and freedom fighters and it lasted about six hours. Two freedom fighters -- Habibur Rahman and Mostafa Kamal Taz – embraced martyrdom; and a total of 42 Pak soldiers were forced to surrender to the freedom fighters.

Samir Kumar Bachchu, commander, Muktijoddha Sangsad of Pirojpur district unit said hundreds of people of Pirojpur came out from their houses and joined freedom struggle following the crackdown by Pakistan occupation forces in Dhaka at night on March 25, 1971.
Major (Rtd) Zia Uddin Ahmed, sub-sector commander of sector-9, formed a big group of Mukti Bahini in Pirojpur. Female freedom fighters also joined this force. After a short training the freedom fighters went to Sundarban.
The guerilla war was directed from there. On May 3 Pakistan Army occupied Pirojpur. The Pakistani occupation forces resorted to mass killing with the local collaborators. They torched hundreds of houses and humiliated girls and women.
As the resistance from the freedom fighters intensified the Pakistani occupation forces fled to Barisal from Pirojpur through Hularhat launch ghat at early hours of December 8.
Thus the valiant freedom fighters freed Pirojpur. Freedom loving people of Pirojpur and hundreds of freedom fighters rejoiced the victory chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan.
Then sub-sector Commander major Zia hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh at Sadhinata Mancha of Pirojpur Gopal Krishna town club.
