If you are an asthma sufferer, it can seem at times that anything - even something as mysterious as acupuncture - is worth trying. Sometime these attacks are predictable and sometimes they are not, sometimes they are minor and easily handled at home, and sometimes asthma sufferers end up in an emergency room.
Asthma is a chronic disease with no cure. There are different types of asthma, but they all which produce the same signs and symptoms: like rapid breathing, sweating, rapid heartbeat, and the uncomfortable sensation of suffocation. Although there is no cure, but there are constant efforts to find new methods of treatment, and there is evidence that acupuncture for asthma is the answer. Acupuncture for asthma is an effective treatment, it has worked where nothing else has. The effectiveness of acupuncture is well-documented. Throughout its long history, acupuncture has established a solid reputation as an excellent alternative for health care that actually works. This method of treatment is recognized and recommended by WHO and National Institutes of Health-USA as a scientific, drug less, free from side effect, complimentary, simple and very effective for various diseases.
Though this treatment has already been started in our country but due to the lack of qualified acupuncture doctors available here and lack of proper perception about the application of this method, the patients are being deprived from the advantages of Acupuncture & Moxibustion treatment. An Acupuncture & Moxibustion doctor should possess adequate knowledge and experience for providing proper treatment to his/her patients. Inadequate education, knowledge and experience may lead to serious medical problems. This method of treatment also exists in Dhaka at “Government, Unani-Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital, Mirpur-13, under the University of Dhaka. Here overseas educated Bangladeshi acupuncture specialists and foreign doctors are providing free treatment service.
The importance of acupuncture treatment are:
It is very effective to treat some diseases, where other methods of treatment could not achieve good results or failed. This treatment doesn’t require any medicine. So toxicity due to medicine will be avoided. It is free from side effect and sit helps to increase immunity.
Western medications for asthma have a number of side effects as well as possible long-term health consequences, for that, many people are interested in other, non-drug approaches. Acupuncture points not only enhance the function of the lung to relieve asthma but also prevent the relapse of asthma, showing good therapeutic effect on bronchial asthma. Points can lower the resistance of the intrapulmonary gaseous passages so as to alleviate asthma over time; during the remission period, the treatment may have an effect of regulating and improving the function of the lung to consolidate long-term effects.
As studies have shown, acupuncture is also able to reduce the dosage of asthma medication. Many developed countries have long used acupuncture successfully for treatment of many conditions. Now, acupuncture for asthma treatment is proving to be an effective treatment for respiratory diseases. In fact, acupuncture as an aid for respiratory ailments could even be a safer alternative than prolonged drug use. In 1979, the World Health Organization listed 40 diseases that acupuncture is effective in treating. Acupuncture for asthma and bronchitis is on that list.
The University Hospital of Vienna did a study that showed that 70% of patients with asthma reported significant improvement in their symptoms after 10 weeks of acupuncture treatments. Scientists at a Chinese hospital conducted a study that reported an immediate effective rate of 98.9% after patients received acupuncture for asthma symptoms. There are many studies around the world related to the success of acupuncture treatment for asthma which has been reported in the medical journals.
Acupuncture treatment diagnoses several different types and causes of asthma. “Excess” type asthma describes situations where something obstructs or constricts the flow of air in the lung. Phlegm can clog the air passages. Or, stagnation of qi (vital force) in the chest can prevent the Lung from moving and working properly. (Stress-induced asthma usually belongs to this pattern.). “Deficient” type asthma occurs when the body’s qi is not strong enough to pull in enough air from the environment.
Exercise-induced asthma usually falls in this category.) In these cases, Lung qi always needs to be supplemented. Treatment may also focus on nourishing the spleen, which directly supports the lung, especially if there is an element of food allergy or digestive sensitivity. Kidney qi may also be treated. It sounds weird, but in Acupuncture medicine the kidneys play a role in bringing the breath into the body.  If inhalation is more difficult than exhalation, the kidneys are usually involved.
Allergy-related asthma is also common, and often aggravated at this time or specific time of year.  This type of asthma is treated with a combination of techniques to strengthen and
support the breathing, calm the allergic response, and open up air passages.
If you are not getting the relief from other treatment then acupuncture for asthma might be something you should seriously consider. Please remember that traditional
acupuncturists treat the whole person rather than a disease and therefore attempt to get to the root cause of the problem rather than treating the symptoms only.
