Ganim International School is playing a vital role in imparting education at remote villages in Melandah upazila of the district. A good number of students coming from economically backward families in Mahmudpur union in Melandah upazila are getting quality education from the institution. Director of the school, Md Amer Muntaq Ganim, said the school is being run on their donation and collection of fees from the students. The school was established aiming to build ideal student by imparting quality education in a good atmosphere, the director added.
Rima Akhtar Alo, an inhabitant of Pach Poyla village and mother of Alif and Adnan, said: ‘I have admitted my two sons in the school seeing the sincerity of teachers and education friendly environment there.’ Md Shahjahan, a resident of Ramvodra village and father of class-I student Sanjida, said his daughter is doing better. He said he particularly liked the teaching of English language and the care the teachers take about the students there. Local philanthropist Alhaj Mohammad Iqbal set up the institution on his 52 decimal land in the union in 2006.
The school initially enrolled students for play group to class-V. Subsequently, it was upgraded to class-VIII in 2012. Due to hard working and professionalism of the teachers the students there have been securing good results in primary school certificate and junior school certificate examinations.
Principal of the institution Md Afsar Ali said 17 students appeared in junior school certificate examination in 2014 from the school and all came out successful. In the exam 6 students got GPA-5 and 2 students got scholarship. In the same year, 23 students of the school also appeared in primary school certificate exam and all of them came out successful. In the exam, 4 students obtained GPA-5, the principal added.
The principal said representatives from upazila education office often visit the school to encourage the students.
Director, Md Amer Muntaq Ganim said: ‘Our effort is to impart quality education to the students. Besides teaching, we also give attention to cultural activities, science, sports, religious activities, monthly exams and views exchange with the guardians to make the students ideal person.’ He said steps have been taken to arrange science fair for the students.
The school sources said 235 students, half of them female, are currently enrolled in various classes in the school. Though the students have to pay monthly fee of Tk 200 each, but 30 poor students are getting free education there. But the school authorities said the institution has been beset with infrastructural problems.
The tin-roofed and tin-fenced school has 10 class rooms, one office room, one teachers’ room and a play ground. It remains vulnerable to natural calamities and freak weather. There are reports of thefts, causing financial burden of few individual donors. On a number of occasions, storm blew away boundary fence of the school. The lack of concrete building is also preventing expansion of educational curriculum such as opening of a computer section.
