The three-day long Jibanananda Fair kicked off on the Amritalal Dey College premises in the city amid a colouful programme yesterday morning. Jatiya Kabita Parishad Barisal unit organised the programme. Former vice chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata, India D Pabitra Sarkar inaugurated the programme as the chief guest. On this occasion, a procession was brought out from the fair venue which ended in front of the Jibananada Auditorium after parading different thoroughfares of the city.
Later, a ‘Lekhok Adda’ (writers’ get-together), poetry recitation, and a discussion on literature were held at the same venue with Tapankar Chakkrabarti, president of Jatiya Kabita Parishad Barisal unit, in the chair. The discussion was addressed, among others, by Dr Pabitra Sarkar, Dr Kazi Mozammel Hosen, Partha Sarothi, Nazmul Hosen Akas, Saifur Rahman Miron and Kazi Shelina. Not a single organistion or institution observed the birth and death anniversaries Jibanananda Das , the greatest Bengali poet of all times, here whereas this type of programme can wave a new wind of literature, the speakers at the programme observed. The programme geared up speed of the practice of Jibanananda, who was best known as the poet of ‘Ruposhi Bangla’, the creator of ‘Banalota Sen’- the unparalleled character embodying the serene beauty of Bangali girls.
The speakers demanded implementation of the Dhanshiri River Eco Park Project and excavation of the river, establishing a museum, reserving the memorials and sculptures of the poet in the places connected with his life, works and memories. Five people were accorded a reception for their contribution to promoting Jibananada culture.
They are Bijoy Krisna Dey, journalist Nasir Ahmed, educationalist D Horisangkar Jaldas, Mahmud Kamal and Prof Zohor Sen Gupta. Born on February 17, 1899 in Barisal, Jibanananda wrote poems featuring transition to modern Bangla poetry and he died in a road accident on October 22, 1954 in Kolkata. A teacher of English in Barisal and Kolkata, he was well read in Mallarme, Rimbaud, Valery, Pound and Eliot. He was unhappy with the conditions of modern living and often expressed a deeply tragic sensibility. On the premises of Barisal B M School and BM College, the education and work places of the poet, there will be no programme held today, sources said. A total of four stalls have been set up at the fair which will remain open from 10 am to 5pm.
