A ten-day solo photo exhibition highlighting the decadent condition of trash-filled Shitalakhya River titled ‘Save the River Shitalakhya’ by Fojit Shak Babu is currently ongoing at the Sufia Kamal Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum (BNM), Shahbag in the city. The exhibition has been organised, in association with BNM, featuring 50 photos taken by Photojournalist Fojit Shak Babu on the occasion of ‘World Environment Day 2015’ for creating awareness to save the river Shitalakhya from pollution and encroachment.
Presided over by Dhaka University Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman, Member of Parliament (MP) Gazi Golam Dastagir spoke at the inaugural ceremony as chief guest on June 2 at BNM while British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert Gibson and Ambassador of France to Bangladesh Aubert Sophie were present as special guests.
Robert Gibson, in his speech during inauguration, said “I am delighted to be here to mark World Environment Day with the opening of this exhibition by Babu. Bangladesh’s rivers are its lifeblood. This exhibition not only highlights the importance of the rivers to the people of Bangladesh but also the impact people have on the rivers. It is important that this legacy remains intact for future generations.”
Fojit Shak Babu said about organising the exhibition, “I think my exhibition will be able to focus on the actual scenario of the environmental disaster in the river Shitalakhya. The exhibition will also contribute significantly to strengthen the movement to save this river.”
The exhibition will remain open to all everyday from 10:30 pm to 5:30 pm, until June 12 at National Museum, Shahbag. l
