Lalmonirhat has been declared the first child marriage free district in the country on Friday.
Cabinet secretary Safiul Alam announced it as chief guest at a gathering at Hatibandha SS Model High School premises in the evening.
Lalmonirhat district administration arranged the programme in collaboration with the development organisation -- Plan international and Rupantor Bangladesh.
These two organisations are working in the district for long to curb child marriage in the area.
Several hundred students expressed their resolve against child marriage by showing red card at the premises and said they would not marry before 18 and would continue their study.
Deputy commissioner Habibur Rahaman said they have taken several steps against child marriage over the last few months.
Among others, Humayun Khalid, member of planning commission was present as special guest.
Among others, Rangpur divisional commissioner, Delwar Bakth, police super ATM Mujahedul Islam and government officials of various sectors were present at the programme.
After the programme a cultural program also held.
Students of different schools, parents, development workers, teachers, public representatives of all unions, upazila chairmen and other government officials were also present on the occasion.
