Aspirants for municipal polls start mass contact

Local leaders of Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party have begun lobbying for party nomination to contest the upcoming election to municipalities in Joypurhat district. Out of five pourashabhas (municipalities) in Joypurhat district, elections will be held in three following the end of their current tenure. They are are Joypurhat, Akkelpur and Kalai. Election to Panchbibi and Khetlal pourashabha will be held later. There are nine words in Joypurhat pourasabha. More than one hundred aspirants both for mayoral and councilor posts from different political parties and some independents have started campaigning.  A total of 41 aspirants from AL have bought party application papers for the mayoral, councilor and women (reserved) seats. The mayoral election is going to be held on a partisan basis for the first time.
 District AL vice President Advocate Nripendranath Mandal PP said party nomination will be finalised by the AL central committee. Former district AL vice President Professor Khaja Shamsul Islam, former joint secretary Nandalal Parsi and Zakir Hossain, poura AL general secretary Mahmud Hossain Himu, joint secretary Mostafizur Rahman Mostaque, ALleader Dewan Mostaqul Islam Mostaque and existing poura panel mayor Badar Uddin Selim, a freedom fighter, have submitted applications for party ticket for the mayoral post.
Prof. Khaja Shamsul Islam said he has been involved in Awami politics for a long time. ;Besides, I was MP candidate from AL in the 9th parliamentary election,’ he said. Mostafizur Rahman Mostaque has already started meetings. He is the only aspirant who has brought a motorbike rally in a showdown in th town.
Aspirant Nandalal Parsi said: “I was the candidate for the mayoral post in the last Joypurhat municipality election from Awami League and was defeated. I have been continuing mass contact to woo voters for a long time. So, I hope to get party ticket.”
­ In all the nine words of Joypurhat pourasabha councilor aspirants of AL are drawing the attention and seeking blessings of the voters by hanging posters with photos at various intersection and public places, and on the walls of houses.  Some local BNP aspirants are also campaigning to woo voters. But  BNP has not started distributing party nomination forms. Some BNP aspirants for mayoral post said BNP-Jamaat will fight jointly in the upcoming pourasabha election. BNP leader and the Principal of Joypurhat Shaheed Zia College, Shamsul Haque, told The Independent, “I am working; I am devoted worker of BNP. So, BNP-led 20 party alliance must give me nomination. He is continuing his contact with voters. Locals say district BNP general secretary Fazlur Rahman, a former mayor and the sitting sadar upazila chairman, may be candidate for the mayoral post.
Another BNP leader also sitting councilor Gulzer Hossain might be candidate for the mayoral post. Now, he is absconding to avoid arrest from cases. He has expressed his willingness over mobile phone to some local newsmen. Another aspirant from BNP for the mayoral post is Nurzahan Happy, also sitting councilor, has started campaigning. Hasibul Alam, a Jamaat leader and sitting sadar upazila council vice chairman, is also expected to run as independent. Titas Mostafa, JP (Ershad) leader and former vice chairman of sadar upazila council, said his nomination has been finalised by the party. Besides, names of many probable independent aspirants are being discussed in Joypurhat town. There are 46,493voters in the municipality.
