Govt to send flight to bring back 341 Bangladeshis tonight

Bangladeshi from China hospitalised with fever
Special Correspondent, Dhaka

Three hundred and forty-one Bangladeshis stranded in the coronavirus-hit Chinese city Wuhan would be brought back on a special flight tonight. They would be kept at a makeshift hospital at the Ashkona Hajj Camp, public relations officer of the health ministry confirmed last night. The decision was finalised at a meeting at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) after the ministry of foreign affairs got the green signal from the Chinese authority.

The Foreign Minister Dr Abdul Momen said Bangladesh citizens will be brought to airport from Wuhan city, the epicenter of the virus, by bus as Bangladesh will send commercial flight upon getting a date from the Chinese authorities. However, a Bangladeshi student who returned from China yesterday morning was admitted to Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka after being diagnosed with fever at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

“Scanners have been installed at airports as part of the preparations to prevent coronavirus from spreading. Isolation wards have been kept ready at different hospitals to treat coronavirus patients,” Maleque said while addressing a programme titled ‘Bangladesh Development Forum-2020’ in the city’s Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).

He also said the necessary measures have been taken at all hospitals irrespective of the ones in the capital and the districts. “We have taken steps to provide the any coronavirus patients with quick treatment. We are especially looking at flights coming from China to Bangladesh. The passengers are being screened at the airport,” he added.

Passengers are also required to fill out a form at the airport. The forms are being preserved so that the passengers can be contacted later if needed.

Meanwhile, a Bangladeshi student who arrived from China yesterday morning was diagnosed with fever by the airport's thermal scanner. He was later taken to Kurmitola General Hospital by a government ambulance.

Health officer in charge of the health centre at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Dr Shahriar Sajjad confirmed that a Bangladeshi passenger, who had arrived in Dhaka from China, was sent to Kurmitola Hospital as he showed early symptoms of coronavirus. “Medical tests will be performed later to determine if he is infected by coronavirus,” he added.

Principal Scientific Officer at the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control & Research (IEDCR) Dr ASM Alamgir said, “We are diagnosing and examining the patient. The patient has been kept under observation because of high fever.”

“At present, it seems that the student is not infected by the coronavirus as he is suffering from a fever due to a cold,” he added.

At least 170 people have died in China from coronavirus infection, and the disease is spreading rapidly. That is why the government is screening travellers flying from China to Bangladesh and taking the highest precautions.
