Diplomatic Correspondent, Dhaka

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has assured Bangladesh that it will consider opening all sectors of recruitment for Bangladeshi nationals there. Sheikh Abdullah bin Nahyan, minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation of the UAE, made the assurance when Bangladesh foreign minister AK Abdul Momen met him on Tuesday. The UAE also lauded the overall socio-economic development of Bangladesh and advancement of Bangladeshi people, a press release said yesterday.

Momen urged his UAE counterpart to make an official declaration on the opening of all sectors of recruitment for Bangladesh nationals in the UAE. Responding to the proposal, the UAE foreign minister assured him of considering the matter in coming days. Momen informed Sheikh Abdullah bin Nahyan of the situation that Bangladesh has been facing with displaced Rohingya nationals living in the country. He expressed his gratitude to the UAE for supporting Bangladesh on the Rohingya issue at different platforms. He also expressed hope that the UAE would continue to support Bangladesh amid the crisis.

The foreign ministers of the two countries held talks during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week programmes at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on January 14. Momen said Bangladesh would like to participate in Dubai

At the end of the meeting, both ministers signed the Agreement on Allotment of Land to the Bangladesh embassy at the diplomatic enclave in Abu Dhabi for reciprocating allotment of land for the UAE embassy in Dhaka.

During the meeting, Momen said that Bangladesh now ranks highest in terms of cumulative GDP growth in the world. With the present growth rate of more than 8 per cent, Bangladesh is also the highest in the Asia-Pacific region, he added.

He also said that the poverty rate in Bangladesh has drastically reduced from 42 per cent to 20 per cent during the last few years. The government plans to reduce it to 15 per cent in the near future.

The meeting of the two foreign ministers took place alongside the Panel Discussion with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the “Future Sustainability Summit: Inclusive and Multilateral Climate Action segment”.

Foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen, Prime Minister’s secretary Tofazzal Hossain Miah, and senior officials of Bangladesh and UAE were present at the event. Momen also said that to achieve the vision set by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh relies on the cooperation and assistance from friendly countries like UAE.

He also said that Bangladesh has made a revolution in the agriculture sector as the country now enjoys surplus in food production. The main pillars of the Bangladesh economy are earnings from the RMG sector, remittances from expatriate, and income from agri and agro-based products, he added.

Momen mentioned that huge participation of women in economic sectors has also contributed to the high economic growth of Bangladesh.

The government is providing financial assistance to marginalised people to develop capital, he added.

The UAE foreign minister praised the huge participation of Bangladeshi IT professionals in the outsourcing sector. He also inquired about the future development strategy of the Bangladesh government. In reply, Dr Momen said the government has taken initiatives to set up as many as 100 Economic Zones, 28 hi-tech parks and related infrastructure, a good number of which have already been developed.
