Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has ruled out the deployment of Bangladesh Army personnel during the upcoming elections to two Dhaka city corporations slated for January 30 next year. Talking to journalists after a views exchange meeting with election commission officials from Barishal region at the regional election commission office in Barishal yesterday, the chief election commissioner said no army will be deployed in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka City South Corporation(DSCC) elections as there is no need to do so.
Police and other regular law enforcing agencies, who will be deployed to maintain law and order, will be well enough to hold the two Dhaka city corporation elections peacefully, KM Nurul Huda told reporters. The CEC also said that the Election Commission (EC) has decided to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) at all booth during the elections to the two Dhaka city corporations.
The CEC said it is a reality that the election will become uncompetitive if the large political parties of the country do not contest the polls. The CEC said an increased number of voters will toughen the contest among the candidates. He hoped that there will be a large voter turnout in the upcoming elections. The meeting was presided over by Md Alauddin, regional EC officer of Barishal, and addressed by different upazila election officials of the region.
