DL DESK, Dhaka
First death anniv of painter Syed Jahangir today

Today is the first death anniversary of Ekushey Padak-winning painter Syed Jahangir.

In remembrance of the veteran painter, a prayer and discussion have been organised at home and abroad. His family members sought blessings from everyone on his departure day.

Born on January 1, 1935 in Tetulia village of Tala thana, Satkhira, Jahangir worked as a professional painter for almost 22 years. He joined Shilpakala Academy as the department head of Arts Faculty in 1977. He was appointed as the director of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA). During his tenure, BSA launched the Department of Fine Arts. Jahangir also made a notable contribution to launching the Asian Art Biennale of Bangladesh. His popular paintings comprise- ‘Attmar Ujjibon’, ‘Ullas’, ‘Dhoni’, ‘Ojana-Oneshya’ and ‘Osoni-Sangket’.

Nature and change in season were the foremost characteristics of Syed Jahangir’s paintings. His painting style was simple, which made his creation remarkable. The inspiration for Jahangir’s paintings was an in-depth observation of rural Bangladesh, its people and the economic hardships they endure. He holds the signature of success in contemporary painting in both figurative and abstract ways. The colours of rural Bangladesh became the highlight in his paintings. In most of his paintings, blue and yellow colours are the dominated ones. Syed Jahangir will live through his art of creation.

He was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1985. He also received Bangladesh Charushilpi Sangsad Honour Award in 1992, the Michael Madhusudan Academy Award in 2000, the Shashi Bhushan Honourable Award in 2005, Lifetime Achievement Award by Berger Bangladesh in 2010 and Hamidur Rahman Award in 2011.

He died at the age of 83 at his residence in the capital’s Mohammadpur area last year. He was laid to rest at his beloved village.
