Blazing batting demonstration from Andre Fletcher (103 not out) and Johnson Charles (90) bailed Sylhet Thunder out of the losing circle when they mauled spirited Khulna Tigers by 80 runs in the high-scoring thriller of the second leg of the ongoing Akash-DTH Bangabandhu-Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram yesterday.

The Thunder brought in five chances in its playing XI in order to post their first win. They fielded Abdul Mazid, Nazmul Hossain Milon, Sohag Gazi, Monir Hossain and Naveen Ul Haq in lieu of Rony Talukdar, Nayeem Hasan, Nazmul Islam Apu, Delwar Hossain and Shafiqullah Shafaq.

Before coming into the match, both Sylhet and Khulna actually were in a contrasting end, where The Thunder had a four-match losing streak that sent them on the verge of derailing from the early exit of the BPL and Khulna Tigers, on the other hand, were on good form of runs won three in three outings.

Chasing the tricky target of 233, Khulna Tigers mislaid their opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz when Monir Hossain removed him for first-ball duck.

On-song Rilee Rossouw in association with Saif Hassan kept the Thunder bowlers in a tight leash and hit a helpful 74 for the second-wicket before Saif’s unfortunate run-out by Mohammad Mithun, who did a decent job getting the throw from Monir Hossain. Saif was out for 20.

Just six runs later, Naveen Ul Haq dispatched a marauding Rossouw, who clobbered 32-ball 52 with four sixes and as many fours.

By getting rid of Shamsur Rahman and captain Mushfiqur Rahim, recalled-spinner Monir Hossain and pacer Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury caused the huge damage that slumped them further from 81-3 to 100-5 in 12.1 overs.

Khulna were still hopeful of overhauling the tricky chase when Robbie Frylinck and Mehidy Hasan Miraj were at stumps. But West Indies pacer Krishmar Santokie rocked the middle-lower down the order with his triple strikes.

Of these wickets, Robbie Frylinck was six runs away from his half century. He belted half-a-dozen boundaries and two big shots over the ropes in his 20-ball 44. With the dismissal of this stocky South African all-rounder, Khulna’s hopes what they had rest for them faded away.

Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury stopped them at 152-9, removing Mohammad Amir as the ninth batsman. Pacer Shafiul Islam, who received injury on his left-hand during the delivery of the third ball of his last over, did not come to bat for precaution.

Krishmar Santokie bagged three wickets, while Ebadot Hossain and Monir Hossain captured two wickets for the winners. Andre Fletcher was named for player of the match award for his blazing performance with bat.

Earlier, Sylhet Thunder amassed a whopping 232-5 in 20 overs, largely thanks to Andre Fletcher (not out 103) and Johnson Charles (90).

The Thunder came to bat after losing the toss on Sagorika’s batting paradise, where 200-plus runs became a regular affair in BPL. Andre Fletcher and his compatriot Johnson Charles raised storm with their bats after losing Abdul Mazid cheaply.

The way two stalwart batsmen started their attack on Tigers bowlers, it was obviously predicted that something special is going to be held. Both the batsmen hit the bowlers with ease and tried to surpass each other.

At one stage, Andre Fletcher was batting 65 and Johnson Charles then was on 84, all the perception was around Charles to be the first centurion of the Bangabandhu-BPL. But Charles was trapped by pacer Shohidul Islam leg-before when he was 90, just 10 runs away from the credible century. He made fifty 25 balls and then 40 came from 13 balls. The West Indies batsman cracked 38-ball 90, laced with 11 fours and five sixes.

The duo cobbled together a brilliant 150 runs for the second-wicket stand before Johnson Charles’ departure. And then, Andre Fletcher drifted toward his century after notching up his fifty from 25 balls. He completed his fifty with a boundary when he smoked Robiul Haque in the second delivery of his second over.

Fletcher then inserted his name in the BPL centurion list as a centurion when brought up his century from 53 balls with a single following a boundary from Mohammad Amir’s last over. This was 19th century in overall BPL.

En route to his scintillating 103, the centurion stitched together a string of partnerships with Mohammad Mithun, captain Mosaddek Hossain Saikat and Nazmul Hossain Milon that set an impressive 223-run target for Khulna Tigers.

South Africa fast medium pacer Robbie Frylinck hauled two scalps for Khulna Tigers.
