Price hike of poultry feed, medicine hits production

An abnormal rise in poultry feeds and medicines have been affecting the growth of this industry, which has helped many farmers in Bhola district make fortune over the years. Sources at the district livestock office said there are about 850 poultry farms in Bhola. Of them, 782 are broiler and 68 are layer chicken poultry farms. They also said there are 377 duck farms in the district. The poultry farmers said the price hike of poultry medicine and feeds is forcing many farms to close down their business in the district. Mofazzal Hossain, 55, a successful poultry farmer in Ilisha union, has made fortune doing poultry business in the last 10 years. He started the poultry business with 300 poultry birds about 10 years ago with an investment of Tk 60,000. Now, there are about 5,000 poultry birds in his farm worth about Tk 30 lakh. Of them, about 2,600 are laying eggs worth about Tk 18,200 everyday. Rest 2,400 chickens are growing fast and expected to give eggs within next two to three months. Anis Lahari, another poultry farmer, said they are frustrated due to the abnormal price hike of poultry chicks, feeds and medicines. He said the government should supply them poultry feeds and medicines at subsidised rates. When contacted, Prodip Kumar Kormoker, the district livestock officer of Bhola, said the poultry farmers are interested with continue their business despite all odds.
