World AIDS Day is observed on 1st December every year. AIDS means Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which is a type of retrovirus. It was first seen in Africa in 1970 and

detected in 1981 in USA. It is a sexually transmitted infection occurred by contact with or transfusion of infected blood, pre-ejaculate, semen and vaginal fluid. AIDS causes anaemia, leucopenia, reduction of

number of platelet, increase gamma globulin,

reduction of cholesterol, abnormality of T-cell and especially reduction of CD4 (T-cells) lymphocytes. Enzyme Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay (ELISA), Enzyme Linked Immuno Assay (EIA), Radio Immuno Precipitation Assay (RIPA), Western Blot Assay etc are the special tests for detection of HIV infection.

However, HIV DIP stick test is low cost test for

developing country. It should be remembered that HIV test rely on antibodies which appear six months after infection. In progressive failure of immune

system allows life threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive.   

The global organisation HIV Epidemic claimed that approximately 36.9 million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS in 2017 and despite the

availability of an ever widening array of effective HIV prevention tools and methods and a massive

scale-up of HIV treatment in recent years, new

 infections among adults globally have not decreased sufficiently. However, having achieved the global

target of halting and reversing the spread of HIV, world leaders have set the 2020 “Fast-Track” targets to

accelerate the HIV response and to END AIDS BY 2030.Risky sex should be avoided and we should remember the slogan:

Use a condom Stay at ease Spread the word Not the disease.
