The Bangladesh Development Forum (BDF) 2020 is set to take place in Dhaka in January next year focusing on the issues relevant to the government’s 8th Five Year Plan and election manifesto. Increasing climate vulnerabilities, speed of urbanisation in the country, localisation of SDGs, addressing inequality, export diversification, and financing for development would also be discussed there, according to sources in the Economic Relations Division (ERD).
The two-day bi-annual conference, hosted by the ERD, would be held at Sonargaon Hotel on January 29–30 next year. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the conference. At least 700 delegates representing the Bangladesh government and various development partners will attend the event. Talking to The Independent, a senior ERD
official said that the theme
for BDF 2020 is effective partnership for sustainable development and discussions on implementing the 8th Five Year Plan for achieving SDGs.
“The BDF 2020 will be crucial for a few salient reasons. This will be the first BDF since the UN Committee for Development Policy (CDP) recognised that Bangladesh’s eligibility for graduation from the status of the least developed country (LDC) in its triennial review in 2018,” he also said.
“This BDF 2020 will be the first year of the 8th Five Year Plan,” he added. The official claimed that the even the ensuing BDF would help identify the most important areas of intervention across selected thematic areas.
Sources said nine working sessions would be held during the two-day-long BDF conference. The sessions are: creating an enabling environment for private sector engagement; climate change and financing to address the challenges; innovative financing for meeting the investment gap; trade facilitation and export diversification; fourth industrial revolution: youth and demographic dividend; primary healthcare for all; rural transformation and addressing inequality; smart urbanisation and better citizen services; and quality education for all.
According to the concept paper prepared for the upcoming meeting, Bangladesh would require USD 2,000 billion to USD 3,000 billion by 2030 to meet the SDGs.
The last BDF meeting took place in Dhaka on January 17-18, 2018.
