A case was filed against the editor and publisher of Prothom Alo, Matiur Rahman, in a court yesterday over the death of Dhaka Residential Model College (DRMC) student Naimul Abrar Rahat. Naimul’s father, Mujibur Rahman, filed the case in Dhaka’s chief metropolitan magistrate's court, alleging that negligence led to his son’s death.
Naimul, a Class IX student, had died of electrocution from a power generator during a programme organised by Kishor Alo, an affiliate publication of Prothom Alo, at DRMC last week. Taking up the case, metropolitan magistrate Aminul Haque ordered the police to exhume the body of the student and launch an investigation. The court also asked the police to investigate an earlier case filed with Mohammad police station in this regard.
The law enforcers have to submit a report on their investigation to the court on December 1. Also yesterday, students of DRMC formed a human chain on campus to protest against Naimul’s death. They alleged that the death was not an accident and demanded punishment for those responsible for the incident.
On his part, DRMC principal Brig Gen Kazi Shameem Farhad said they have provided all kinds of support to Naimul’s family. “We have formed a three-member probe committee and asked it to submit its report within the next seven days,” the principal said.
“As far as I know, the committee members have already spoken to eyewitnesses, the ambulance driver, and Kishor Alo editor Anisul Hoque,” he added. Explaining the reason for not filing any case, Shameem said: “We are waiting for the decision of the institution’s governing body.” Regarding Kishor Alo, Shameem said that the organiser (Kishor Alo) was in charge of all security measures except for the two main gates. “They were monitoring the entrances. Even the DRMC teachers entered the venue with passes given by Kishor Alo,” he added.
“Kishor Alo must take responsibility for this tragic incident. Those who are responsible for this negligence must be punished,” he said. Naimul was electrocuted behind the stage set up for the “Ki Ananda” programme. The organisers took him to Mohakhali’s Universal Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Later, the police had handed over the body to the bereaved family without an autopsy on their request. Naimul’s family, which hails from Noakhali district’s Sonamuri upazila, resides in Dhaka’s Agargaon area.
