Goethe-Institute Bangladesh, in association with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), arranged an international performance art and installation show titled ‘Id-Clash’ at the Plaza premise of BSA’s exhibition building from November 5 to 7. The three-day event features narration, writing, video projections, songs and stage performance, which are being performed by five performers NGO worker Anonnya, artiste of Shilpakala Academy Katha and German artistes Michelle Niwicho, Melissa Marie Garcia Noriega and Greta Pimenta.
The event ‘Id-clash’ is an initiative of an international project, which runs with support from the Nationals Performance Netz, Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and a number of other cultural departments of the German federal state. The project focuses on the male-to-female transidentity and draws attention to different concepts for living and stages of transformation.
The lifestyle of the Hijras in South Asia follows a centuries-old mythological tradition. Genetically speaking, Hijras are men or intersex who have the outward appearance of women, but who do not feel as if they belong to either of the two sexes. They call themselves the ‘third gender’. This show depicts the lifestyle of the transgender people, locally known as the Hijras community.
ID-clash throws the exclusive nature of the gender binary into question. As soon as one moves away from a strictly binary system of gender, countless possibilities and models of gender self-definition present themselves. ‘Id-clash’ had its world premiere in Cologne in October 2013 and got nominated for two awards--‘Cologne Dance Theatre Prize 2013’ and ‘Kurt Hackenberg Prize for Political Theatre’ 2013. Beginning at 6pm, the event is scheduled to conclude today.
