Betel nut growers in Bhola say they are happy with the good harvest and prices this season.
Bhola, historically known for big betel nut growing area in the country, has plantation over 7750 hectares of land, said officials at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) here.
They said the soil of this district is suitable for cultivation of this crop, widely used with betel leaf.
This is grown mostly in tropical areas like Asia, pacific countries and East African nations.
But its plantation is dwindling in the district because erosion of land by the rivers Meghna and Tetulia. Thousands of hectares of such betel nut plantation have been devoured by the rivers over the past 60 years. But yet the efforts of growing betel nut, a cash crop, in this region are going on.
Faroque,45, a betel nut grower of Bapta union in Bhola sadar, they earn over Tk100,000 a year from plantation on one hectares of land. They say the crop is “yellow gold” for them.
Betel nut grower Bashir Uddin ,55, Banagla months of Ashwain and Kartick (October-November) are the peak period for harvesting this crop.
Altaf Bepari, a betel nut trader in Bhola, said ten trucks of battle nuts are sent to other districts from Bhola every day.
Sources aid betel nut and betel leaf are exported to some middle eastern nations, India and Pakistan.
A kilogram of betel nut is sold in the market at Tk 400-450. A bunch of 10 pieces is being sold at Tk15-20, which was Tk10-12 few years
ago.Due to the rise in the number consumers the prices have increased, the sources said.
