Their roles in the murder

The murder of Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a madrasa student in the city of Feni, was pre-planned, according to the case statement. It was carried out on the “instruction” of madrasa principal Md Siraj-ud-Daula. Sixteen people, including two girls, were involved in setting Nusrat ablaze. Five of them masterminded the murder. Nusrat’s brother Mahmudul Hasan Noman filed an attempted murder case, accusing eight people and some unnamed others. It became a murder case after Nusrat died of her injuries. On May 5, Police Bureau of Intelligence (PBI) inspector Shah Alam charged 16 people, including the eight named in the case dossier. The 16 individuals charged by the PBI were madrasa principal Siraj-ud-Daula, Nur Uddin, Shahadat Hossain Shamim, councillor Maksud Alam, Saifur Rahman Mohammad Zobair, Shakhawat Hossain Jabed, Hafez Abdul Kader, Absar Uddin, Kamrun Nahar Moni, Umme Sultana Poppy, Abdur Rahim Sharif, Iftekhar Uddin Rana, Imran Hossain Mamun, Mohammad Shamim, Ruhul Amin, and Mohiuddin Shakil.

The police revealed that Moni, who is related to Shamim, admitted to purchasing the burqas and handing them to him.

Outlined below are the roles of the accused in the gruesome murder.

Siraj-ud-Daula: The main accused was the principal of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil Madrasa.

Although he did not take part in the murder directly, he provided instructions on how to carry it out.

According to the case statement, he

sexually abused Nusrat and later pressured her to withdraw the case against him. He later directed the others to kill her.

Siraj-ud-Daula was arrested prior to the incident in connection with the sexual abuse case filed against him by Nusrat. He masterminded the plot to kill Nusrat from inside prison.

Shahadat Hossain Shamim: Shamim was angry with Nusrat for rejecting his advances and offer of a relationship. The case statement reveals that Shamim planned who was to do what. He took Tk. 10,000 from local councillor Maksud Alam to buy burqas and kerosene.

He gripped Nusrat’s face while the others set her on fire.

Based on his statement, the PBI recovered the glass used to pour kerosene on Nusrat and a burqa used in the killing.

On April 12, Shamim was arrested at Muktagachha in Mymensingh.

Maksud Alam: The local Awami League councillor was part of a human chain demanding the release of the madrasa principal on March 28.

According to the charge sheet, he paid Tk. 10,000 for buying the burqas and kerosene. The PBI said he had knowledge of the entire incident.

On April 12, the PBI arrested Alam at a hotel in Dhaka.

Saifur Rahman Mohammad Zobair: He is the main accused who took part in the murder directly. Wearing a burqa and gloves, he tore Nusrat’s scarf and tied her hands and legs with it. He lit the match after pouring kerosene over Nusrat.

Abdul Kader: Also known as Hafez, he was a friend of Nusrat’s brother Noman. On the day of the crime, he secured the main gate of the madrasa. Within minutes of Nusrat’s death, he informed her family that she had committed suicide by setting herself on fire.

On April 18, the PBI arrested Kader from Dhaka’s Kamrangirchar area.

Absar Uddin: He too helped secure the gate. According to the charge sheet, he pressured Nusrat’s family to withdraw the sexual abuse case.

Kamrun Nahar Moni: A relative of Shamim, she gathered Tk. 2,000 and bought two burqas and gloves.  According to the charge sheet, she took part in the murder directly. Ruhul Amin: The joint secretary of the madrasa’s governing body and a local Awami League leader, he masterminded the murder from the beginning. After the incident, he assured the other accused that he would manage the police. He also tried to pass the death off as a suicide.

On April 19, Feni police detained Amin for questioning. Later, they arrested him in connection with Nusrat’s murder.

Mohiuddin Shakil: He was on guard at the stairs of the cyclone centre during the murder. On April 25, the PBI arrested Shakil from the Ukilpara area of Feni

Nur Uddin: A close aide of the madrasa principal, he played a vital role in the murder. He was responsible for keeping tabs on the situation before Nusrat was torched. He also monitored the whole incident from the ground floor of the building when Nusrat was set on fire.

On April 12, the PBI arrested him from Mymensingh and later sent him back to Feni.

Nusrat, an Alim examinee, was set ablaze after she went to Sonagazi Islamia Fazil Madrasa to sit for an exam on April 6. Having sustained severe burn injuries, she died on April 10 while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

In her dying statement, the victim said the madrasa principal had been harassing female students for some years. He used to lure students by promising to give them question papers before examinations. If someone did not agree to his advances, he would harass them.

On March 27, the principal abused the victim. When she informed her family about the incident, they filed a case against the principal.
