President returns to capital   

UNB, Dhaka

President Abdul Hamid yesterday returned to the capital after a week-long visit to his home district of Kishoreganj.

A VVIP helicopter carrying the President took off from Kishoreganj at 3.45 pm and it landed in Dhaka at 4.20pm.

During the visit, President Hamid witnessed the progress of different development works in Austagram upazila.

He visited Austogram part of Itna- Mithamoin-Austagram under-construction connecting road, Austagram- Nawga, and Austagram- Kastul-Bhatshala roads.

Case filed against four ‘rapists’ in Sylhet

UNB, Sylhet

A case was filed against four rapists after a suicide note was found in the victim’s vanity bag at Laltek village in Bishwanath upazila here on Monday evening.

Police did not disclose the name of four accused.

Shamim Musa, officer-in-charge of Bishwanath Police Station said victim’s father Shukur Ali filed a case against the four on Monday evening after finding the suicide note.

The family handed over the suicide note to police while police are trying to arrest the four accused who are on the run.

On October 10, the gang-rape victim hanged herself at home. Police recovered the body and it was buried at her family graveyard after autopsy.

According to family sources, on October 6, the victim went to visit her elder sister at Cheragi village in Dakkhin Surma upazila.  She returned home on October 10 and committed suicide.

2 held with 10,000 yaba tablets

BSS, Dhaka

Members of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (CMP) arrested two persons with 10,000 pieces of yaba tablets from Wari area here.

The arrested were identified as Ali Hossain, 31, and Md Ridwan, 23.

Gulshan zonal team of DB (north) conducted a drive at Wari, old Dhaka around 6:45 pm on Sunday and arrested them in possession of 10,000 pieces of yaba tablets, additional deputy commissioner of DB (north division) Md Golam Saklayen said on Monday.

Deputy Commissioner DB (north division) Mashiur Rahman said that the arrestees confessed that they used to buy yaba pills from the frontier area of Cox’s Bazar district and sell the abusive drugs among drug traders in the city’s Wari and Sutrapur areas.

A case has been filed against them with Wari Police Station.

225 urban poor get donations

BSS, Rajshahi

Some 225 urban poor and underprivileged households were given livelihood support including sewing machine for improving their living and livelihood condition after the best uses of the income-generating supports.

Non-government organisation Brac under its ‘Urban Development Programme (UDP)’ donated the stuffs at a simple ceremony at the conference hall of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) yesterday.

On the occasion, 500 other slum people were given seeds of various agricultural crops and vegetables so that they can elevate their socio-economic condition through boosting homestead crops and vegetables.

City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and its Ward Councilor Md Kamruzzaman attended and addressed the distribution ceremony as the chief and special guests respectively with Chief Revenue Officer Shahana Akhter Jahan in the chair.

In her welcome speech, Regional Coordinator of UDP Farzana Parveen illustrated objectives of the project and its activities and implementation strategy on the occasion.
