Dhaka ranks worst in US Air Quality Index

Dhaka has been ranked worst in the Air Quality Index (AQI), developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Bangladesh capital had a score of 245 at 08:25am on Thursday morning, indicating that the air quality was ‘very unhealthy’. A numerical value between 201 and 300 indicates that the general public will be noticeably affected, and that sensitive groups are set to experience reduced endurance in several activities.

Also, the score between 201 and 300 is classified as very harmful by the AQI. In the AQI, Dubai, Kuwait City and Kuala Lumpur occupied the next three slots with scores of 166, 166 and 163 respectively.

Among other cities suffering from air pollution, Lima of Peru had a score of 155, Chongqing of China 141, Lahore of Pakistan 136 and Beijing of China 134 to be placed on 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th positions respectively.

The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality. It tells people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is, and what associated health effects might be a concern for them due to air pollution.

The EPA has developed the AQI to report air quality, which is divided into six categories indicating increasing levels of health concern.

An AQI value over 300 represents hazardous air quality and below 50 the air quality is good.
