Policeman suspended over post in Facebook

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

Police Inspector Mahmud Saiful Amin has been suspended after four days for posting a controversial Facebook status where he claimed that the whip of Parliament and some police officials collect money from a gambling racket in Chattogram. The Facebook post stated that Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, the whip of Parliament and general secretary of the Chattogram Abahani Club, has raked in Tk. 180 crore over the last five years. The post was uploaded at 1:57am on September 20.

Amin was formerly the second officer of Halishahar police station and also served in the Chattogram Mohanagar Lock-up. He is posted in Dhaka at present. On September 24, the police headquarters issued an order, signed by acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainur Rahman Chowdhury, to temporarily suspend Amin, under Government Service Rules 2018 12(1), for violating departmental discipline and tarnishing the image of the police. During his suspension period, Amin will be attached with the deputy inspector general of the Rangpur Range of the Bangladesh police force.

Asked about the reason behind the suspension, Md Mainur Rahman Chowdhury refused to comment on the matter to The Independent. He suggested speaking with his subordinate officer instead. Md Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general (media) at the police headquarters, told The Independent that the order was issued on September 24. But he did not explainthe reason for the order.

Meanwhile, Shamsul Haque Chowdhury filed a lawsuit against the inspector under cybercrime law yesterday. In a Facebook status, his son. Sarun Chowdhury, said that Amin had been sued and dismissed for his Facebook post. Amin’s Facebook post on September 20 had claimed that the whip and some police officials were involved in gambling operations.

In the status titled “Club-Gambling-MP and OC”, Amin said: “Casinos, flush, housie, Hazari, Kite, Paisha (Chana Tara) are the only way to get big bucks without hassles of the metropolitan and district headquarters OCs since time. Prostitutions centring flat and massage parlors generate assistance as second income source for the OC’s. Cashier of a police station collect the money as the representative of the OC.

If the OCs take Tk 5 lakh daily from these two sectors way, but it reached 1.5 crore a month. This time there is the civil team of the police station, Sierra Day / Night, Lima Day / Night / Golf Day Night [sic].”

Amin also implicated the Detective Branch (DB). He alleged that every month money is sent to the homes of all DB officers.  He said that officers-in-charge (OCs) no longer accept money from drug traffickers and instead they want village fairs to run all year-long.

According to Amin, such fairs involve dancing, gambling, housie, “one/ten”, and “Dabba games”. He said in his post that an OC drawing a salary of Tk. 50,000 could collect Tk. 15 lakh in one month and Tk. 45 lakh if the fair runs for three months.

Turning his attention to Rashed Khan Menon, Amin wrote: “Menon has decorated a chair in Dhaka. There is nothing to blame. Naxalite has turned into mint for the politics. That is, they own the mint.[sic].”

He also spoke about Shamsul Haque Chowdhury in his post. “In Chattagram, MP Shamsul Haque Chowdhury is the master. As my own prediction, he is the owner, caretaker and godfather of Chittagong Abahani gambling board for last five years. If he takes 1 lakh daily, in the last 5 years, he has earned almost Tk 180 cores.[sic]”

Amin claimed Chowdhury sent Tk. 10,000 to the OC via Jubo League leader Dighal. He also said the MP benefits financially from the trafficking of yaba drugs. His post stated that 80 per cent of yaba drugs originating in Teknaf were transiting through Patiya before the government’s recent crackdown on drug traffickers.

Concluding his post, Amin wrote: “The situation is almost the same in the country with and without gambling. In the previous government, Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Mirrza Abbas, Mohammad Mosaddak Ali Falu and now these are doing by Rashed Khan Menon, Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, Khalid.
