Erosion by the river Padma has taken an alarming turn in Harirampur upazila of Manikganj.
Thousands of people are facing uncertain future as many homesteads, cultivable lands, orchards, mosques, temples, three schools, madrasahs, a UP office, two village markets have become vulnerable to erosion by Padma River.
Harirampur upazila complex, upazila health complex, police station, 200-year old Andharmanik Bazaar, different government offices, schools and colleges are now also under threat as a portion of the Padma River bank protection embankment went into the river over the past couple of weeks.
Manikganj Water Development Board (WDB) sources said the WDB had built 1800-meter- long embankment at a cost Tk20 crores in two phases to protect the Padma River bank from the erosion.
Some 1200 meters of embankment between Bhelabad and the upazila headquarters were built with CC blocks in 2007. Later, WDB built 600 meters of embankment between Andharmanik and the upazila headquarters in 2008.
A portion of the embankment went into the river in the last couple of weeks. Entire embankment will go into the river if the authorities do not take initiative immediately to save the embankment.
Vice-chairman of Harirampur Upazila Parishad Abul Hashar Sobuj said the WDB has taken an initiative to dump 20,000 sand bags along the 200 yard eastern side of the embankment this year to check the erosion. But the contractors dumped 25 percent of the CC blocks violating office work order, he said.
Sub-Divisional Engineer of Water Development Board, Manikganj, Mainuddin said he has sought fund from higher authorities to save the embankment from the erosion.
The executive engineer of Water Development Board MA Taher said, “I am trying my best for arranging fund to build embankment and other structures to prevent erosion by the Padma River.
Regarding the matter, my office has sent project profile for the third time to the higher authorities concerned, but we are yet to receive any positive response.”
Two hundred homesteads, crops on three hundred acresof  land and several educational institutions of Boyra, Ajimnagar, Ramkrishnapur,
0Kanchanpur, Sutalori and Harukandi unions of the upazila have been devoured by the river this year.
