Asaduzzaman to be made CEO of ‘Nat’l Security Cell’

DEEPAK ACHARJEE, Dhaka

The Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Md Asaduzzaman Mia, is going to be appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the proposed "National Security Affairs Cell". The appointment will be made within this month. He will be the first CEO of the proposed cell that will be formed under the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), government sources said. The sources said the CEO's main task will be to help implement the decision of the "National Committee on Security Affairs (NCSA)".

For conducting activities of the cell, an office would be rented near the Prime Minister’s Office.

For assisting the CEO of the specialised cell, in the first phase, seven employees would be appointed by the authorities concerned.

Already, the Cabinet Division and the Ministry of Home Affairs have begun the process of appointing the CEO and the seven employees, a senior official of the Cabinet Division told The Independent.

“The higher authorities have selected Asaduzzaman Mia as the CEO of the ‘National Security Affairs Cell’ on a contractual basis. A notification will be issued by the Ministry of Public Administration soon,” he said.

Talking to this correspondent earlier, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal had said that an office of the security cell would be rented near the Prime Minister’s Office and a CEO would be appointed soon.

“The main task of the CEO is to implement the decision of the meetings of the National Committee on Security Affairs,” he said. The Cabinet Division will provide administrative support to the CEO’.

The CEO is likely to be co-opted to the high-power committee, the sources said.

After coming to power, the Awami League-led  government had formed a 27-member high-power committee - the National Committee on Security Affairs — led by the Prime Minister.

“The task of the committee is to review the activities and problems of the state security and defence affairs,” according to the gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division on March 27, 2019.

The committee will also direct the authorities concerned to take steps on state security and prepare recommendations for the cabinet, if needed, the notification said.

Fifty-two days after issuing the notification, the Cabinet Division further reviewed the committee, increasing its members from 27 to 29 that included the security adviser to the Prime Minister and the Director General of Bangladesh Coast Guard, on May 19, 2019.
