Activities of IUB Debate Club

Founded in 1999 Independent University Bangladesh Debate Club (IUBDC) is one of the most happening clubs in Independent University. From the very beginning IUBDC has aimed to provide the student body with a platform to speak up and be heard both nationally and internationally in English and Bengali. In the following years, IUBDC has moved onto become a mainstay in the national debating circuit and is one of the earliest representatives from Bangladesh in the annual World University Debating Championships. It is probably the only club that takes part in at least 20 tournaments every year in national and international level. The club takes part in 1 or more tournaments every month and hosts intra debating tournaments every year where amateur debaters are selected for the top teams based on their performance.
In 2003, IUBDC participated in World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Since then they have participated in almost every WUDC. Their footprints reached Ireland, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, India and even USA. Last year, IUB become champion at the BRAC University English Debate Tournament held in BRAC University from 28th-30th of August. The winning team consisted of Fardeen Ameen and Christopher Sangma who defeated Dhaka University and Islamic University of Technology in the grand finale of the tournament. Prior to that, the team defeated IBA and North South University in the semi-finals and quarter finals respectively.
