The BNP is contemplating strengthening its issue-based movement and taking to the street after Eid-ul-Fitr, according to party leaders. Its main demand would be release of the party’s ailing chairperson, Khaleda Zia. Along with the ongoing movement for the release of the former premier, the party has already started an issue-based movement to ensure fair prices for the agricultural produce and stop repression on women. The party would strengthen the movement after Eid, said the leaders.
The party's lawmakers, on the other hand, would raise their voice in Parliament during the budget session, beginning on June 11, for the release of the party chairperson, who is serving a 17-year prison term in two graft cases, the leaders added.
Talking to The Independent, senior party leaders said they have realised that the government would not release the BNP’s ailing chairperson without any movement and that is why they would take to the street on social issues and the demand for Khaleda Zia's release.
BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said they are thinking of taking a political course of action after Eid over the issue of release of the party chairperson and other issues.
“We could not organise any major programme due to the month of Ramadan. We will, of course, announce a new political course of action,” he added.
The leader, however, said they are yet to finalise the mode of programme and it would be finalised after Eid. He put emphasis on the need to ensure fair prices for the agricultural produce, otherwise farmers would be adversely affected.
BNP vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu said there is a movement at present. They recently submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioners and staged demonstration at both upazila and union levels to ensure fair prices for the agriculture produce, including paddy.
He also said the BNP is carrying out a series of programmes on various issues on a limited scale, including the release of Khaleda Zia, and it would be strengthened after Eid.
Dudu, also convenor of the Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal, a front organisation of the BNP, said the Krishak Dal has carried out a weeklong programme across the country at upazila and union levels to ensure fair prices for paddy and other agricultural produce. He also said all problems would be resolved with the release of Khaleda and that is why they are putting emphasis on the need to strengthen the movement to free her.
A senior BNP leader, preferring anonymity, said they would raise their voice both inside and outside Parliament and launch a greater movement after Eid. He also said the party would go ahead with its movement to free Khaleda Zia and take the people along with it.
