BNP assistant international affairs secretary Barrister Rumeen Farhana is set to become an MP from a seat reserved for women in parliament as she submitted nomination papers with the Election Commission (EC) yesterday. Farhana, the daughter of eminent politician Oli Ahad, went to the EC around 12:30pm and submitted the nomination paper to EC joint secretary Abul Kashem. Earlier, the BNP nominated Rumeen from among a dozen of prospective leaders vying for a seat reserved for women. There are 50 seats reserved in parliament for women lawmakers and the seats are distributed among political parties in proportion to their number of seats in the House.
Since five BNP MPs-elect took oath at the last moment of the stipulated time, the EC is arranging the election to the seat the party got. The EC earlier completed polls to the remaining 49 reserved seats.
Among the reserved seats, 43 women MPs were elected from the ruling Awami League, four from the main opposition Jatiya Party, one from Workers’ Party and one independent.
Rumeen sought nomination to contest the December 30 parliamentary election from Brahmanbaria-2 constituency but Ukil Abdul Sattar finally got the party ticket to contest the poll from the constituency.
Earlier on Wednesday, the EC announced the election schedule for the vacant woman reserved seat.
Yesterday was the last date for submitting nomination paper. The EC will scrutinise the papers today and May 28 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal of nomination. Election to the seat will take place on June 16.
Since Farhana is the lone candidate from BNP, she is likely to be announced elected unopposed after scrutiny.
After filing the nomination papers, Rumeen said, “Since the party has kept trust on me and nominated me, I would raise my voice in parliament seeking the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.
I will also speak for the interests of the people and work to restore democracy.”
